On Monday evening, January 7, 2019, the Bay City Noon Optimist Club will present the TRAVEL AND ADVENTURE FILM SERIES, program featuring “Germany, Switzerland and Austria” with Marlin Darrah at 7 p.m. at the State Theatre.
Travel with the world’s most traveled filmmaker from the boisterous markets of Munich to the foothills of the Alps, tour fairy tale castles and cross into Tirol and climb atop Zugspitze.
Cruise the Rhine River, past the legendary Loreley, descend into dungeons, tour Burg Eltz and Rothenburg to see Germany’s best wood carving, a dose of medieval punishment, and tour the town’s lamp-lit ramparts.
From Cologne to Baden-Baden to the Black Forest, we’ll enjoy the good life, German-style. Berlin is back as a great European capital with a now-thriving eastern sector, and only hidden remnants of its fascist and communist past in a city.
In Switzerland — Luzern, Bern, Zürich, and Lausanne, we will enjoy urban charms, do a little river rafting — without the raft, and see a variety of eye-opening art, ponder Swiss innovations, from their open-minded drug policies to hush-hush underground arsenals, all before a backdrop of Switzerland’s stunning natural beauty.
In the spectacular Swiss Alps, with cowbells ringing on breathtaking ridges, we hike and bike, get sprayed by waterfalls raging deep inside a mountain, and savor local cheese at 10,000 feet and ride Europe’s highest railway up the mighty Jungfrau for glacier sledding and oh-wow views.
